Tim Nielsen
Golf Course Superintendent
Maintenance Bldg – 1500 N. Madison

Our Golf Course Superintendent, Tim Nielsen is a “Class A” member of the
Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Lucrative Class A status
is earned through a combination of formal education, experience, continuing
education, and passing the GCSAA IPM Exam. Class A membership
demonstrates personal commitment to lifelong learning, environmental
stewardship, and elevating golf course management. We are honored to have
Tim leading our experienced grounds crew here at Creekmoor.
Tim graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of
Science degree in horticulture and turfgrass management. His career began
when he assisted in the construction of Drumm Farm Golf Club in
Independence, Missouri. Once the construction of Drumm Farm was
complete, he became the assistant superintendent for grow-in and golf
course maintenance. Soon after he was promoted to golf course
superintendent until he took over his current role at Creekmoor in 2011.
He has served on the board of directors of the Heart of America Golf Course
Superintendents Association for many years including serving as the
association’s president twice. In his career as a golf course superintendent,
Tim has devoted extensive time and effort in promoting the game of golf and
the art of the greens-keeping and for those efforts he was awarded the
prestigious Chester H. Mendenhall award by the HAGCSA in 2015.
Tim decided upon a career in golf course maintenance because of his passion
for the game of golf. Of the many notable golf courses he’s had the privilege
of experiencing, a few stick out to him as the best he ever played. He enjoyed
the pristine conditioning and hospitality of Sage Valley in Augusta, GA and
the formidable test of Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina. But his overall favorite
golf experiences happen at Ballyneal in Holyoke, CO. He describes Ballyneal
“as pure as golf could possibly be”.
His favorite PGA golfers are Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Rory McElroy and
Dustin Johnson, but he thinks Tiger Woods is still the most enjoyable. Of
course, to Tim the most enjoyable part of watching professional golf isn’t
about the golfers. He truly loves learning about the golf course itself,
examining the architecture, the conditioning and seeing how those aspects
impact the way the golfers attack the course.
